Prof. Ana Gago MartínezProf. Ana Gago Martínez is the Head of the Analytical and Food Chemistry Department at the University of Vigo and until recently was Director of the EU Reference Laboratory for the control of Marine Biotoxins (2009-2021). She will present a paper at WSC2023 on “Risk characterization of Ciguatera Poisoning in Europe within EUROCIGUA projects: The Analytical perspective” in which she sets out the activities and findings of an important EU funded research project on Ciguatera poisoning, a problem which is becoming more and more relevant due to its increased incidence in temperate waters worldwide, and particularly in Europe with the findings of the presence of the causal microalgae (Gambierdiscus spp) in the Mediterranean Sea. is the Head of the Analytical and Food Chemistry Department at the University of Vigo and until recently was Director of the EU Reference Laboratory for the control of Marine Biotoxins (2009-2021). Esther Garrido Gamarro is a Fisheries Officer from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation in Rome. She has recently completed a major research project studying microplastics in all food commodities, including bivalve molluscs. She will present a paper setting out an important study undertaken by FAO which estimates the risks of dietary exposure to micro- and nanoplastics, principally due to the additives used in plastic manufacture and sorb contaminants. The paper offers recommendations for future work on microplastic particles to support improved food safety governance. |

Valeska Weymann is a Senior Expert / Technical Key Account Manager for Aquaculture at GLOBALG.A.P. where she oversees the management of voluntary standards for Good Agricultural Practices in relation to the aquaculture sector. Her paper at WSC2023 will address a “Holistic Approach Towards Safe and Sustainable Aquaculture Supply Chain” in which she will describe the latest GLOBALG.A.P. Aquaculture Standard version 6. For application by suppliers and buyers alike, this standard addresses all stages of production and covers key sustainability aspects currently for 36 aquaculture species available in the market, as well as compound feed manufcturing operations.

Jogeir Toppe is a Fisheries Officer from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation in Rome with many years of experience working in developing countries to improve sustainable use of fishery resources. Along with Molly Ahern (also from FAO), he will present a paper on “Bivalves, an Exceptional Source of Nutrients” setting out the dietary contribution of bivalve molluscs, taking into consideration the latest scientific understanding of both the nutritional benefits and food safety risks.
