SIPA joined Eucolait, CLITRAVI and ECFF in writing to the European Commission about proposed legislation setting maximum residue limits (MRLs) on quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs).
QACs are the active agents found in many hygiene biocidal products used routinely to clean down food processing equipment. They are particularly effective against Listeria monocytogenes, the food pathogen that has the highest fatality rate of the five most common food poisoning organisms.
The federations want to retain the ability for food businesses to continue to use QACs appropriately and responsibly. In order for this to be possible, it is important that MRLs for QACs are set at a level that is achievable by businesses.
