2024 EFSA Annual Report on Emerging Risks and Horizon Scanning Activities
EFSA has recommended further research into glass fibres in shellfish (following a study by the University of Brighton, UK) and into levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in freshwater fish (following a study by the Environmental Working Group in the US). Palytoxin (PITX) in shellfish was identified as an issue for possible further consideration.

Mineral oils (MOHs) – FRUCOM update
FRUCOM has received information on draft Regulations and a Recommendation regarding Mineral Oil Hydrocarbons (MOHs), currently under discussion by the Commission. It appears fish or seafood will not be affected by any new MRLs.

Market Advisory Council (MAC) consultation on “the urgent need for effective implementation of EU import control rules across Member States”
The MAC has asked for comment on its draft advice on the urgent need for effective implementation of EU import controls, as regards IUU fishing, across Member States. The draft document recommends that the European Commission and EU Member States improve the capacity and processes for carrying out IUU controls on imported fish, and for improved communication and collaboration in this area. The draft advice is available here.
