A new White Paper, ‘Worker Voice on Fishing Vessels’, has been published by Global Seafood Assurances (GSA), the organisation that developed and runs the Responsible Fishing Scheme.
The publication sets out the state of play in terms of Worker Voice and Grievance Processes in marine capture fisheries (and specifically on fishing vessels). Worker voice is how workers voice concerns and influence matters that affect them in the workplace. Grievance processes are mechanisms that workers can use to address grievances relating to their employment.
GSA says that it recognises the need for workers to have Worker Voice during their employment on board fishing vessels, but little guidance is available in this area. This white paper aims to provide information to build consensus on best practice, and also highlight issues that need to be addressed.
