The EU–New Zealand Trade Agreement is now in force

Published by SIPA

The EU–New Zealand trade agreement entered into force on 1 May 2024. The agreement eliminates duties on EU food and drink exports to New Zealand. It also eliminates or substantially reduces EU duties on most New Zealand goods exported to the EU, notably fish and seafood products.

According to the New Zealand’s Ministry of Trade, 99.5% of New Zealand’s current fish and seafood trade can now enter the EU tariff free. The remaining fishery product lines will have their tariffs eliminated over 5 or 7 years.

New Zealand fishery products that will not benefit from instant duty-free access include*:

  • Frozen blue grenadier (Macruronus novaezelandiae), 03036970, with a staged tariff elimination over 5 years
  • Frozen shrimps of the genus Penaeus, 03061792, with a staged tariff elimination over 7 years
  • Several prepared and prepared tunas, including tunas in vegetable oil, with a staged tariff elimination over 7 years
