On 5 February 2020 the Council’s Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER) confirmed the provisional agreement reached on 18 December on the recast of the EU Drinking Water Directive (Directive 98/83).
The provisional text is attached along with the press release issued by the Council.
For Annex 1 part B (Chemical parameters) the position for chlorate is 0.25mg/l with the note ‘Parametric value of 0,7 mg/l shall be applied when a disinfection method that generates chlorate, in particular chlorine dioxide, is used for disinfection of water intended for human consumption. Where possible, without compromising disinfection, Member States shall strive for a lower value.’
The EP ENVI Committee is expected to vote on the compromise agreement on 18 February and final adoption is expected to occur by June 2020.
